A couple was arrested for suspected child abuse and murder in the death of a 14-month-old girl.
The suspects were identified as Alfredo Munoz, 40, and Kelly Munoz, 34, both Long Beach residents.
On Nov. 7, Long Beach police responded to a local hospital after the toddler was found unresponsive and with signs of trauma.
Later that day, police were notified by medical staff that the child was on life support and would not survive. Three days later, on Nov. 10, the girl died from her injuries.
Both homicide and child abuse detectives began investigating the case, along with the Department of Children and Family Services.
Following an investigation, detectives determined the child had reportedly suffered ongoing abuse from her father and stepmother and that her death was the result of that abuse.
On Nov. 25, both suspects were arrested for murder, torture and child abuse causing death. They were booked into the Long Beach City Jail with no bail.
“Homicide detectives will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office next week for filing consideration,” Long Beach police said.
No further details, including the suspects’ booking photos, were released. Anyone with information on the case is urged to call Homicide Detectives Ethan Shear and Kelsey Myers at 562-570-7244.
