FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — With Thanksgiving break in full effect and Christmas around the corner, now is the time when stores will be flooded with shoppers.
It’s also a busy time for law enforcement agencies, which are increasing the number of officers on the close.
“Our shared mission is simple. To protect our communities so people can enjoy the holidays without fear,” said Fresno County Assistant Sheriff Ryan Hushaw.
On Wednesday morning, the Fresno Police Department, Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, and California Highway Patrol stood side by side to announce Operation Christmas Presence.
Officers from every agency in uniform and undercover will be patrolling busy shopping malls and centers for the next several weeks.
“It doesn’t matter where you live in Fresno, whether you travel to Fashion Fair, Rivepark, or another shopping area in another part of Fresno, you deserve to be safe during this shopping season, and we are going to make that happen,” said Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto.
Chief Mindy Casto says shoplifting crimes have decreased, which she believes is partly thanks to Proposition 36.
The measure passed a year ago and allows drug possession and petty theft to be charged differently.
“Especially for repeat offenders, and that has been a great tool in deterrence,” said Casto “Our theft has decreased 24% in the city of Fresno and that includes shoplifts.”
A tool, Assistant Sheriff Ryan Hushaw says, they have no problem using to the full extent.
“If you choose to prey on others during this holiday season, we will come after you and we will make sure you face the consequences of your actions,” said Hushaw.
Authorities are also asking you to do your part.
“Safety is a shared responsibility. We ask our community to stay alert. Think about shopping with a friend, secure valuables, and report anything that seems suspicious,” said CHP Captain Ian Holguin.
