As Thanksgiving approaches, a record 81.8 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home, according to AAA.

This marks an increase from last year.

Travelers in Kern County are experiencing varied conditions as they prepare for the holiday weekend.

Dalia Solis, who is traveling from Visalia, Calif., to Gilbert, Ariz., advised, “Try to get going as soon as possible because everybody travels during the holidays, especially during Thanksgiving.”

Solis reported an easy trip so far, but anticipates traffic as they approach the Grapevine area and Los Angeles.

Gloria Ramirez decided against traveling to Arizona due to concerns about traffic and weather, opting instead to spend the holiday with her grandchildren.

“Too much traffic out there. And the weather, due to the weather also,” she said.

Anthony Nguyn, planning to visit family in Orange County, intends to travel after Thanksgiving to avoid congestion.

“I think we’re gonna go really early in the morning, so there’s no traffic, but there’s still gonna be traffic, a whole bunch in Los Angeles,” he said.

Solis shared travel tips, including packing snacks, a good music playlist, and pre-downloaded movies for children.

The California Highway Patrol reminds drivers to inspect their vehicles, maintain a safe distance, and refrain from drinking and driving. They also suggest planning and designating a driver if necessary.
