CHARLES PHOENIX, the charming, cheerful, and history-loving champion of mid-century moxie, has a way of bringing whimsy and wit to Southern California events throughout the calendar. But come Nov. 28, the slide-collecting “Ambassador of Americana” will stop by the famous Palm Spring Visitors Center, “the city’s iconic mid-century gateway,” for something especially whimsical and wonderful: The showy structure’s first holiday lighting. Tru-Tone Bulbs will give the pointy-roofed wonder a gorgeous glow, with “hundreds of lights” adding to the illuminated splendor. And if you want to be there for the flick of the switch? The upbeat, bulb-brilliant event kicks off at 4:30 p.m., giving you a chance to get back to the pool, or the tram, or whatever splashy Palm Springs spot you plan to call upon.

ENTRY IS FREE TO THE EVENT, which will spotlight the 1965 structure in all of its splendor. The landmark, which turned 60 in 2025, debuted six decades ago as a tramway-close gas station. Today, it is often the first stop for Palm Springs tourists seeking an instantly glamorous mid-century photo opportunity, as well as helpful tips about making the most of the sunny city. Sunny, Palm Springs may definitely be, but it embraces the chilliest season in spirit, with more merriness coming right up. Look for the Festival of Lights Parade Dec. 6 and the Walk of the Inns Dec. 11, as well as caroling concerts, Santa sightings, and more, to pop up around the panache-filled destination in the coming weeks.
