College of the Redwoods wrestling traveled to Chabot college last Thursday and came away with a dual meet loss 30-21 before finishing in ninth place at the PST Invitational on Friday. Jacob Torres went 3-0 on the weekend with a second-place finish in the tournament after a medical forfeit, as Caleb Aguilera and Isaiah Bell both went 4-2.
Head coach Brandon Benvenuti said of initial impressions of the contests and things his squad could take from them, “I thought we looked great against Chabot, who took second in the Big Eight Conference for the South Division. We had eight weights, forfeiting two to contribute to the final dual score. For some of our guys, it was their first time at their actual weight they’ll be at for postseason, for instance Caleb Aguilera at 133 pounds, who went out and got the pin. Sam Blue wrestled at 141 pounds and got the pin, and Isaiah Bell wrestled 149 and got the pin as well. He did 149 this year so it was business as usual for him. Jacob won his match, so those were the standouts for Chabot.
“A couple of those guys kept the momentum going into the next day, Caleb going 3-2 and top six in class, as was Isaiah, and Jacob made the finals.”
CR is back in action on Dec. 6 at Modesto JC in conference play, where the top eight qualify for state.
“We’ve got a couple guys that are right there, hoping they can punch their ticket for state (at Sierra College),” said Benvenuti.
Cal Poly Humboldt, meanwhile, wrapped up action last Sunday in the Roadrunner Open in Bakersfield with five pins and 12 individual victories. Darrell Nanpuya again led the way at 141 pounds with two bonus-point wins, including an 18-1 tech fall. Freshman Lucas Vasquez had a pin in 32 seconds at 149. Both Gil Mossburg and Joe Anthony Perez had wins at 157 and Sage Adie and Kelly Little at 184. Dakota Sanders and Garen Keshishian each prevailed in one of their matches at 125.
In the heart of their season, Cal Poly Humboldt will host CSU Pueblo for a dual on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. inside Lumberjack Arena. Head coach Lennie Zalesky was unavailable for comment.
