Guests at a popular Northern California resort woke up to a parking lot glinting with shattered glass after 48 cars were broken into on Thanksgiving.
Police say the vehicles were burglarized before sunrise Thursday at the Great Wolf Lodge in Manteca, an indoor water-park destination in San Joaquin County, according to multiple reports.
Officers were called to the property around 7:30 a.m. and found rows of cars with smashed windows and belongings lying on the pavement. Items, including electronics, toiletries, financial documents, and at least one firearm, were taken.
Investigators said thieves entered the gated lot by jumping a parking barrier.
The resort requires drivers to pull a ticket to enter the parking area and typically staffs on-site security. But authorities said it remained unclear whether guards were patrolling the lot at the time of the break-ins, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The lodge does have surveillance cameras, but detectives have not yet received the footage, according to the Chronicle. According to police, Great Wolf Lodge told investigators it is compiling the video before handing it over.
“Unfortunately, especially around the holidays, when people are expecting that there will be presents and other valuables in vehicles, it is always best not to leave items in your vehicle that can be taken,” Sgt. Steven Beermann of the Manteca Police Department told KCRA 3.
KTLA reached out to Great Wolf Lodge and Manteca Police Department, but didn’t hear back in time for publication.
