John Keene Kelly
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Keene Kelly on November 3rd in Yorba Linda, California. He was 87.
Born on March 29th, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio, “Keene,” as he was known by those closest to him, lived an active life filled with personal adventure and professional accomplishment.
Beloved by family and friends, Keene is survived by his partner, Nanda, his sister, Sue Lumb, and his sons, Christopher and Kevin Kelly. He was predeceased by his brother, Neil, and his sister, Nancy.
From an early age, Keene showed traits of spirited independence and innate talent. This was exhibited in his academic success, self-determination, and convivial sense of humor. He spent summers hitchhiking across the country and worked at Sequoia National Park before graduating from Xavier University, serving in the U.S. Army, and eventually leaving the midwest.
Keene’s boundless energy and engaging mind opened doors in business and society, leading to his appearance on the television game show, “Hollywood Squares.” His strong communication skills eventually landed him as director of public relations for Western Pacific Railroad until he was heavily recruited in the mid-70s by financial PR giant, D.F. King & Co., to run their San Francisco headquarters. By the 1980s, Keene’s strategic initiative and exceptional public speaking propelled him to recognition and great success in the competitive mergers and acquisitions arena, as documented in Moira Johnston’s book, Takeover: The New Wall Street Warriors. In the latter part of his 45-year career, Keene continued his excellence in the financial sector, sharing his vast knowledge via speaking engagements at conferences and universities, including NYU’s Stern School of Business.
Beyond professional achievements, Keene was a devoted son, brother, father, and friend known for his generous Irish spirit. He was a beacon to those down on their luck and was deeply appreciated for his helpful wisdom. His midwestern roots gave him a reputation as a gentleman, while life in California celebrated his impeccable sense of style, which included an eclectic tie collection. He loved to attend professional sports events, historical museums, and music concerts. Whether for business or leisure, his wanderlust manifested in travels to Japan, Australia, Ireland, and much of Europe. Keene found his way to Alaska as well as every major city in the US – and made extra efforts to visit his native Cincinnati family when flying cross-country. Wherever he was, his heart was with his two growing boys… and will be, always.
Rest in peace, John Keene Kelly. You are dearly missed and forever remembered.
