BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Southbound Highway 99 is closed south of Bear Mountain Road Monday morning due to officers shooting at a high-speed chase suspect, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officials with CHP say the high-speed chase was first in the hands of the Wasco Police Department but was later taken over by CHP.
A male suspect was reported to have shot at CHP officers before being spike stripped in efforts to stop the suspect’s vehicle.
After a successful attempt at stopping the vehicle, the suspect pulled over and continued shooting at officers. Officials with the CHP said officers fired back at the suspect.
According to CHP, the suspect is dead. No one else was injured.
CHP advises drivers to use alternate routes and the Highway 223 exit if you are already travelling southbound.
CHP says there is no estimated time of the highway reopening.
