Mahjong has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity, with the number of events posted to Eventbrite rising 179 percent nationally between 2023 and 2024.

Here in the Bay Area, the growth is particularly notable, with mahjong gatherings happening nearly every day of the week—not to mention frequent pop-ups and community events throughout the region.

One of those leading the surge is San Francisco’s The Mahjong Movement, an organization born with the hope of promoting empathy and compassion for Asian culture and community and bringing together people from different communities and age groups.

“I was looking for a way to bridge connections with Asian elders and the Bay Area community,” says founder and president Lily Ho. “It brings me joy when I see people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds sitting at a table together, playing a shared game.”

The Mahjong Movement now hosts events and pop-ups across the region in partnership with venues like The Jay Hotel and the Asian Art Museum. We’ve rounded them up—along with several other regular events—so you can find a mahjong game (almost) any day of the week.
