The Los Angeles County Tree Lighting Ceremony drew a crowd on Monday night to watch as lights on a beautiful 50-foot Christmas tree were turned on at the Music Center. The tradition was set by late County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn in honor of L.A. County children in 1948, modeled after the first National Christmas Tree Lighting launched by President Calvin Coolidge in 1923.

Los Angeles County Supervisors Kathryn Barger, Janice Hahn, Lindsey P. Horvath, Holly J. Mitchell and Hilda L. Solis, joined Music Center President Rachel S. Moore in offering holiday greetings before lighting the Christmas tree.

The event included live music, the LA2050 Holiday Impact Market, and family-friendly art-making workshops where attendees of all ages could create festive decorations and ornaments using recycled materials. LA2050 Holiday Impact Market offered a variety of products sold by nonprofits, small businesses and artisans.

In a statement from the Music Center, “This year, help spread even more joy by contributing to an art supply drive supporting local arts and social service nonprofit, Music Changing Lives, serving the Pasadena/Altadena community.”

The crowd enjoyed performances by The BlackBerry Project, an all-woman big band led by Amanda Mora, and comprised of professional musicians in Los Angeles.
