CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) — As people get ready to give gifts this holiday season, neighbors in the Harlan Ranch community in Clovis are concerned about porch pirates and mail theft.

A string of videos posted to social media shows a man dressed as a delivery driver stealing packages.

“Ok, that’s crazy because that’s behind me, right there. Yeah, that is on the street behind me,” said neighbor Steve Gejeian.

He has lived in the neighborhood for about 11 years. Although Gejeian’s family hasn’t been the victim of porch pirates, he shares how he’s concerned about this latest theft.

“It looks like they’re showing up in the zip-up yellow jacket, which is deceptive. And with our kids, it makes me a little nervous,” Gejeian said.

Gejeian said the community mailbox he uses was recently broken into, creating extra stress this holiday season.

“It’s very disturbing because a lot of personal information. Bills, a lot of things come in the mail that you’re concerned about,” said Gejeian.

Clovis Police encourage neighbors to call police if they see something suspicious. Sergeant Nathan Jaime said there could be serious consequences for thieves if caught.

“If it’s under $950, it’s considered misdemeanor petty theft. If it’s over $950, it’s considered grand theft, which is a felony.”

At minimum, authorities explain a person could spend at least a year in jail for stealing mail and or packages.

But beyond the potential criminal charges, Gejeian said the act is just cruel.

“It’s one thing losing the stuff, but that someone else would do that to you. I think it stabs at the heart a little bit,” he said.

A piece of advice is to make sure security cameras aren’t blocked by any holiday decorations. Police add, if you do find someone stealing, you want to gather as much identifying information about the suspect, and again, report it to authorities.
