WASHINGTON (TNND) — A New York City college professor who wrote about ending policing, was appointed by mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to work on community safety issues.
“I’m excited to announce that I have been asked to join the Mamdani Transition Team to work on community safety issues,” Alex Vitale wrote on the social media platform, X.
“A New Era for NYC.”
Vitale has on his X page that he is the author of “The End of Policing.” He also teaches sociology at Brooklyn College.
“The End of Policing” was published in 2017. The book states that police don’t have citizens and that they shouldn’t combat gangs.
“In most cities, gang units function as a mechanism for racialized social control,” the book states, according to Fox News. “Black and Latino youth are labeled as gang members for hanging out together, while white youth groups are dismissed as harmless.”
Vitale also teaches courses about African Americans in the criminal justice system.
The top comment on Vitale’s post asks, “Are you going to work to protect Jews going to their place of worship? Or are Jews not part of the community Mamdani cares about?”
Vitale replied to the comment saying, “Of course. My family is Jewish.”
