OAKLAND, Maine —

Friends of a Maine man who was seriously injured in an explosion at his home on Thanksgiving said he remained in critical condition several days after the blast.

Cliff Hannon, 66, was inside his house on Lakeview Drive in Oakland when the explosion happened Thursday afternoon.

Hannon, who is president of the Waterville Sunrise Rotary Club, was flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Randy Phair, Hannon’s friend and a fellow Rotarian, told Maine’s Total Coverage on Monday that Hannon will need surgeries to treat his burns and broken bones.

Phair said Hannon is always quick to help others and an inspiration to all who work with him.

“He has been in charge of events that have raised money for veterans and for the community,” Phair said.

Hannon’s neighbors said their thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. The Waterville Sunrise Rotary Club has set up a Venmo account to raise money for Hannon and his wife, Dale, as their two-story home was destroyed in the explosion.

The explosion sent debris flying in every direction. Some items from the home were still dangling in tree branches on Monday.

Two homes, one on either side of Hannon’s house, were severely damaged in the blast and are uninhabitable. One of the displaced neighbors told Maine’s Total Coverage that her side wall was completely caved in.

The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the explosion. Officials believe a propane leak found an ignition source, which led to the explosion, but investigators also determined the home’s propane tanks were not the source of the leak.

Investigators have been examining several propane appliances, two heaters and a kitchen range, to see if they were the source of the gas leak.

Maine’s Total Coverage crews spotted insurance adjusters at the explosion site on Monday.
