Sacramento police are investigating an early-morning assault that left a man dead. The roadway remains closed as detectives process the scene and gather evidence.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento police are investigating an early-morning assault that left a man dead Tuesday near Stockton Boulevard and Broadway.

According to the Sacramento Police Department, officers were called just after 4:30 a.m. regarding a person down in the roadway. When officers arrived, they found an adult man with life-threatening injuries.

Despite lifesaving efforts from first responders, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the incident is being investigated as an assault. Detectives have responded to the area, and the investigation remains active. 

No information has been released about what led up to the assault, possible suspects, or any potential motive.

The intersection of Broadway and Stockton Boulevard is currently closed due to the ongoing investigation. 

Sacramento police are asking drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes. The roadway will reopen once officers finish their on-scene work.
