Officials have identified the two Escondido police officers and a detective who shot and wounded a knife-wielding man who allegedly lunged at cars in traffic late last month.

The shooting occurred Nov. 26 at South Centre City Parkway and 13th Street shortly after noon.

Police confronted the man, who had been walking through traffic carrying a knife, and ordered him to drop it, but he ran toward the detective with the knife in his hand, authorities said. All three fired, striking the man, who was identified as Juan Ramos, 54.

Ramos fell to the ground, got up and ran toward the uniformed officers with the knife still in his hand, said San Diego police Lt. Chris Tivanian, who is investigating the shooting. The officers shot again, striking him and causing him to fall again. Additional officers arrived and fired less-lethal sponge rounds and were able to remove the knife from his hand and render first aid.

Officials said Ramos was expected to survive and would face charges of assault with a deadly weapon on an officer.

The three who fired at the man were identified as Officer Timothy Mills, who has been with the department for eight months, Officer Robert Bellamy, who has been on the force for 17 years and Detective Jeffery Bolton, who has been with the department for three years.

The uniformed officers were equipped with body-worn cameras, which were activated.

San Diego police homicide detectives are investigating the shooting under the countywide memorandum of understanding on officer-involved shootings.
