The Burbank K-9 killed in the line of duty last month continues to give back to the police department he served for two years as the pup’s look-alike merchandise is selling out fast.
After Spike was shot and killed during a standoff with a gunman in Burbank on Nov. 22, the devastating loss for Burbank police has led to an inspiring show of gratitude from the community.
For more than a week, people have come to the Burbank Police Department to drop off flowers and treats to remember Spike.
Supporters are also turning to the department’s website to purchase black plush toys that resemble Spike and T-shirts. As of Tuesday afternoon, all items related to Spike the K-9 were sold out.
“We have our K-9 shirts, which are the Burbank Police Foundation with the K-9 unit in the back,” Christine Hatch with the Burbank Police Foundation described, explaining the merch was initially made before Spike’s death.
“We’ve had the shirts. We’ve had the plushies. But then with Spike’s passing, we did a memorabilia package, so that whoever wants to keep Spike in their hearts and in their homes, they have the opportunity to do so,” Hatch added.
Hatch assured the public that the proceeds support the K-9 unit as well as the entire Burbank Police Department.
With outpouring support from the public since Spike’s death, a public memorial was scheduled to take place Wednesday outside the police department.
“It’s been heartwarming to see the community come together and honor a hero,” Hatch said.
