Three days after a mass shooting at a child’s birthday party in Stockton claimed four lives, the search continues for the suspects. As the Stockton community mourns and works to move forward, state leaders have offered support. On Tuesday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta said his office has offered support in the Stockton investigation. “We have reached out to offer support,” Bonta said at a Giving Tuesday event in Sacramento. “We often do in times of tragedy, that’s part of the spirit we’re talking about here today. Working together, collaborating, partnering, offering resources, personnel if needed. But the lead agencies on the ground are taking the lead there.”Bonta also expressed his condolences for the victims. “Our hearts go out to all those impacted. Just a tragic incident. Again, never normal, and never acceptable. Unfortunately, in the United States of America, we lead the world in many things that are great. We also lead in something that is horrific and awful, and that is gun violence,” Bonta said. “No part of our country is immune, including the great Golden State of California.” KCRA 3’s Ashley Zavala asked the Attorney General if his office’s offer of support in the Stockton shooting investigation was accepted.”No, not that I’m aware of,” Bonta answered. However, he shared that he’s confident that the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office is able to handle the investigation. “We have a lot of faith and trust in our local law enforcement partners across the state, including those in the Stockton area—both the police department, the sheriff’s department,” Bonta said. “We have worked very successfully all across the state with our law enforcement partners, federal, local, fellow state partners. And I think that public safety officers and law enforcement will do what they always do. Sometimes it takes time. But I know that they’re hard at work chasing down clues and doing what they do best: helping hold those accountable who harmed our communities.”On Monday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol to honor the victims. But as of Tuesday, there has been no further comment from Gov. Newsom on the shooting. The governor left the state on Tuesday for a cross-country trip to New York, Washington, D.C., and Arizona for a mix of political and official state business. He plans to return on Saturday.KCRA reached out to Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi for comment on the governor’s departure, but has not heard back.
