Two people died in a fiery four-car crash on the highway in San Jose, California, on Tuesday, Dec. 2, according to multiple outlets.

Firefighters were called to the scene north of Curtner Avenue in San Jose, Calif., shortly after 10:50 a.m. local time, CBS San Francisco reports.

There were four vehicles involved in the crash — two Teslas, a Lexus, and a Toyota Sienna, California Highway Patrol confirmed to the outlet and NBC Bay Area. Following the crash, the two Teslas and the Lexus caught fire.

“It was a pretty robust dispatch from the Fire Department, and upon arrival, crews did find multiple vehicles involved with fire,” Battalion Chief Bennett Yendery told CBS San Francisco.

Two people died, and another two were hospitalized, though the condition of the survivors has not been made public, according to the outlets.

Yendery said, per the outlet, that the firefighters’ first priority was containing the flames.

“The chain of events … it’s hard to say what happened when,” he said. “A lot of smoke obscuring the situation initially, but when I did gain visual, all three [vehicles] were involved in fire.”

California Highway Patrol shut down all northbound lanes in proximity to the crash, NBC Bay Area reports. All lanes were reopened by 3:45 p.m. local time, CHP confirmed in an X post.

Authorities assured CBS San Francisco that the “involvement of the Teslas and their lithium batteries did not create additional difficulties,” adding that the “fire went out in an expected time frame.”

The two victims were an adult and a child, who were traveling in the Lexus, CHP confirmed to NBC Bay Area. The driver of the Lexus was also hospitalized. The driver of the Toyota cooperated with investigators at the scene before being released, according to the outlet.

A person in one of the Tesla vehicles was also hospitalized, CHP told NBC Bay Area.
