An AC Transit bus carrying eight passengers collided with a white Nissan SUV in East Oakland yesterday afternoon, jumping the curb and driving into the side of a working auto-body repair shop.
According to AC Transit spokesperson Robert Lyles, the bus hit the car at the intersection of 68th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard around 1:15 p.m., causing both vehicles to lose control.
Authorities have not yet said which vehicle had the right-of-way or whether either vehicle ran a red light.

According to NBC News Bay Area, the SUV had a passenger, who was also taken to the hospital after the crash. All eight bus passengers and the bus driver were taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries, according to AC Transit communications director Robert Lyles.
Within moments of the crash, people in the area attempted to help the passengers and the driver get out of the bus. That evening, the front end of the bus could be seen lodged deep inside the business, where a section of a brick wall was broken.
An Oakland Police officer guarding the scene told The Oaklandside that the bus’ windshield was shattered when it hit the wall. Bricks ended up deep inside the bus and surrounded the bus driver when she was found inside.
A boom, and then a crash
According to Kevin Warren, the owner and operator of the repair shop that was hit, All Bout Cars Collision Repair, bystanders broke bus windows to help people get out. He said it took about 20 minutes for ambulances to arrive.
Warren was inside the shop working when he first heard the boom of the crash.
“ It’s always accidents here, so I looked in the front, and I heard about two more bangs before I saw the bus trampling into my business,” he said. “The bus had to travel like half of a football field, if not a whole football field, to enter my building.”
Warren said that while the passengers were outside waiting for medical help, one of them told him that another passenger on the bus had distracted the driver. The Oaklandside reached out to AC Transit and the Oakland Police Department about this and other details surrounding the collision, but neither has yet responded.

He also said he has owned the building since 2019, and this collision marks the fifth time a vehicle has jumped onto his property, hitting the fence. He said today’s collision was the first time a vehicle collided with the building itself.
“I’m ready to relocate,” he said.
Warren’s personal car, which was parked near the entrance, also felt the impact of the collision as the bus crashed into the building, as can be seen from the video below. The Oakland resident said he was told by authorities that they could not remove the bus from his place of business until a structural engineer could assess the damage and place stilts on the building to avoid its collapse.
