A 23-year-old man died Wednesday night following a head-on crash on Highway 34 in Ventura County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, around 9:50 p.m., two pickup trucks collided on the highway about halfway between Oxnard and Camarillo.
CHP is investigating the deadly crash and detectives believe a Toyota Tacoma driven by the 23-year-old drifted into oncoming traffic, at which point it crashed into an oncoming Chevrolet Silverado 2500 driven by a 47-year-old man.
Both drivers were transported to an area hospital, with the driver of the Tacoma being pronounced dead upon arrival. The driver of the Silverado was transported with major injuries and his current condition was not disclosed. Neither of the men has been identified.
Highway 34 was closed for several hours for cleanup and for traffic detectives to begin their investigation. At this time, it’s unclear if drugs, alcohol or speed played a role in the crash.
Anyone with information about the deadly collision, including witnesses or those with security footage, is urged to contact the California Highway Patrol’s Ventura office at 805-662-2640.
