BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — The Blue Zones Project and the City of Bakersfield partnered on Friday morning to host the city’s inaugural “Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day” at Williams Elementary School.

The event marked the first year Bakersfield commemorates the walk, which honors Ruby Bridges, the first Black student to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South.

The day aims to educate students about Bridges’ impact and emphasize student safety while walking to school. Volunteers accompanied students on their walk, and upon arrival, students attended an assembly to learn more about Ruby Bridges’ legacy.
