FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Investigators painted the picture of a 2024 shooting that turned Thanksgiving into a tragedy, as the case of Anthony Calderon’s death continued in court Friday.

The room was seemingly split in half.

On one side, family and friends of the three defendants.

Uniese Brown, Christopher Stanley, and Demarion Hackett are each charged with killing 22-year-old Calderon.

His family sat just across the aisle, hoping to take their fight for justice forward into a jury trial as prosecutors began calling witnesses to the stand.

Fresno Police crime scene investigator Matt Schaefer walked prosecutors through the scene of the crime.

Evidence showed aerial shots of the scene covered in colored dots, all signifying bullet casings found by investigators.

With no known surveillance video from the day of the shooting this visual served as our first look at what police initially called a “reckless and brutal attack.”

“Initially we located 28 casings at the north end of the scene in front of the vacant lot, and then in front of the complex’s northern most driveway there were an additional 27,” said Shafer.

More than 50 shots were fired that night with several different types of casings discovered.

On Thursday, one witness that was with Calderon at the time of the shooting testified that he fired back at the alleged attackers with shots of his own.

Leading the defense to question if the sources of the casings have been properly identified.

“You don’t know, Mr. Schaefer, how many guns were actually fired, do you,” asked defense attorney Miles Harris.

“I do not, no,” replied Shafer.

“You don’t know who fired those guns, do you,” Harris once again asked.

“No I do not,” Shafer responded.

Evidence says a magazine was recovered near the scene, that investigators chose not to fingerprint, prompting Harris to press Schaefer over the processing of the crime scene.

“Okay, so the detective on the scene knew that this magazine was recovered from inside the residence and said ‘oh, don’t worry about testing that one,’ right,” Harris asked.

“Correct,” Shafer confirmed.

The judge has not yet decided whether or not the case will go to trial.

As it stands, both sides will prepare their arguments before a return to court next Monday.
