An armed suspect was shot and killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies in Paramount after pointing his gun at them during a standoff, authorities said Friday.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday, deputies from the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station responded to the 8000 block of Alhambra Avenue, near Paramount Boulevard, in Paramount after receiving a report of a man possibly armed with a gun, authorities said.

When they arrived, deputies found a man on the porch holding a handgun in one hand and a 2-year-old toddler in the other.

For more than 25 minutes, deputies tried to persuade the man to release the toddler and relinquish the firearm, sheriff’s officials said.

The suspect refused and eventually pointed the gun at deputies, prompting a deputy-involved shooting.

The man was struck and fell to the ground. The toddler was removed safely and found unharmed, according to sheriff’s officials.

Investigators later confirmed that the child was the man’s son. Deputies rendered medical aid until Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics arrived, treated the man, and took him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The investigation remains ongoing.

NBC 4 reported that the suspect’s girlfriend had contacted deputies before the shooting to report that he was armed. It was not immediately known what prompted the shooting.

No deputies were injured.
