San Francisco Giants are reportedly in talks to hire veteran baseball leader Ron Washington as their new infield coach, General Manager Zack Minasian announced on Thursday.

Washington served as manager of the Los Angeles Angels last season but stepped down on June 20 due to health concerns.

Interim manager Ray Montgomery took over for the remainder of the season, but neither returned after its conclusion.

Including a 36-38 mark last season, Washington’s career record is 763-748 (.505) with the Texas Rangers (2007-14) and Angels. He guided Texas to the first two pennants in franchise history in 2010 and 2011.

Washington, an infielder, played parts of 10 seasons in the majors with four teams (1977, 1981-89).

He previously served as an infield coach with the then-Oakland Athletics (1996-2006, 2015-16) and the Atlanta Braves (2017-23).

Minasian said Washington’s experience at the professional level should be a valuable asset for new Giants manager Tony Vitello.

“I give Tony a lot of credit,” Minasian said.

“He talks about being a team and filling blind spots as well as possible. I think he recognizes his experience level at the professional ranks. He originally brought up Wash and was saying, ‘What do you think about bringing Wash in, with his experience?

“My brothers and my father have experience with Wash dating back to Texas. Obviously, Perry hired him to manage with the Angels. Not only them, but really anyone Wash comes into contact with just thinks the world of him.”
