Day two of World Sevens Football went off with yet another great day of matches with fast-paced action, intense physical moments and great celebrations from eight of the top Women’s clubs in the Americas.
San Diego Wave dominant on the pitch with the wins and celebrations
The Wave earned the top spot in their group standings following their two victories on Saturday, and drawn much attention for their prematch dances and celebrations. To start ahead of their big Concacaf W Champions Cup rematch against Club America, goalkeeper and captain Kailen Sheridan brought her young daughter into the festivities.
The Wave held off América’s strong start in the first half with some help from the goal posts, and were stymied in the second half by América’s goalkeeper, Sandra Paños who made 10 saves. The Wave did win the match after a successful penalty by Quincy McMahon, and a miss by Scarlett Camberos.
The Wave played later against the Uruguayan Club Nacional de Football and won handedly 3-1 with their own teammates seen in the stands alongside the Wave supporter’s group, the San Diego Sirens.
The versatile forward, Makenzy Robbe, kept her team lead in the tournament with three goals and scored the first in the victory against Nacional.
San Diego Wave FC having gone unbeaten in the group matches will take on the Brazilian team Flamengo at 10 a.m. PST.
Flamengo got the day started on the right foot with a thrilling victory against AFC Toronto after sending it to extra time with an equalizer in the dying moments of the match.
Flamengo brought on a field player in a goalkeeper’s jersey in the last minute and she sent in a shot toward the box for a forward who attempted to shoot it again. The deflection bounced around in front of Ju Ferreira who sent it in to make it 2-2.
Flamengo went on to win the match in the penalty kick shootout with a solid save by their goalkeeper, then celebrated wildly with the young fans in attendance.
Flamengo lost their final match against Tigres, but still qualified for Sunday’s semifinal match against San Diego Wave FC
María Sánchez steals the show for Tigres
The Mexican national team star, María Sánchez, made her case for the player of the tournament throughout the day by adding three goals to her tally, adding to her hat trick from the night before.
Sánchez scored twice against the NWSL Shield winners KC Current to start the day and redeemed a missed penalty kick with her wonderful left-footed finish.
The winger scored a brace later on after she intercepted a poor pass out of the back right in front of her and unleashed a shot with her right foot toward the near post.
Tigres ended up losing the patch against the Current in the penalty shootout, but went on to beat Flamengo 3-0 with the first goal coming from one of the Sánchez’ toughest goals of the tournament.
After the goal and Tigres’ victory the in-stadium DJ played “Señores Soy de Tigres,” a song that featured vocals by Sánchez herself. Even head coach Pedro Martínez Losa was seen on the broadcast singing along word for word while kissing the badge on his shirt.
Tigres finished atop their group and will play Club América in a rematch of 2025 Liga MX Femenil Apertura final. In the playoff Tigres came out on top 4-3 in the aggregate score to claim the championship in their November meeting at 8:30 a.m. PST
América earned their spot with an emphatic 3-0 win against Colombia’s Deportivo Cali, which had notable fan support in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, both seen and heard on the broadcast. To celebrate their victory the Aguilas performed the most cohesive team celebration of the night.
