TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – An overflowing digester at the Oakland Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) caused raw sewage to spill onto a street in Topeka’s Oakland neighborhood Saturday evening.
Sylvia Davis, director of the City’s utilities department, said the overflow left the WWTP site and went south, spilling onto the corner of NE Poplar and Grant Streets.
Davis said crews responded to contain the overflow and clean up the spillage.
She added that there is a slight odor, “but you have to very close to be impacted by it,” Davis said.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will be notified per standard protocol.
