Covered California, the state program that provides health care plans under the Affordable Care Act, is bracing for impacts if federal leaders don’t extend COVID-19 era health care subsidies. Jessica Altman, Covered California’s executive director, said the state program covers just under 2 million Californians at the moment. “We expect as many as 400,000 of our current enrollees may choose to go without coverage or try to find another place to get their coverage if these enhanced tax credits do expire,” she said on California Politics 360. “We don’t have the privilege of being at a standstill because we are in open enrollment,” Altman said. “It’s very unfortunate we are in this moment of uncertainty where we don’t know if Congress will extend these enhanced Affordable Care Act credits.” If the federal government does not extend the credits, Altman said now is a good time for those on Covered California to check their options and make sure they’re informed.
