A report of possible gunfire near Mount Miguel High School prompted a brief lockdown of the campus Thursday while officials investigated, finding no evidence of a shooting.

Someone reported hearing what sounded like a firearm discharging in the general area of the school in the 8000 block of Blossom Lane in the Spring Valley area shortly before 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

“Deputies conducted a walkthrough and clearing of all buildings and areas of the school campus but found no weapon or evidence of a firearm being discharged,” a release from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said. “The school lockdown was lifted a short time later.

“No one was hurt,” the release added.

School administrators directed students and staffers to remain secured in their classrooms and offices while deputies investigated, the department said.

At that point, normal operations resumed at the campus.

The case was being investigated as a possible instance of swatting – a type of malicious and false crime report intended to trigger an emergency response on the part of law enforcement.
