What began as a nonprofit during the pandemic took a major step last month, opening a storefront with a mission to make memories within the community and beyond.

Wake Me Up Farms Bakery Café celebrated its grand opening last month in Fresno at 1122 E. Champlain Dr., Suite 101, selling everything from baked sourdough bread and sweet treats to coffee, teas and juices.

Wake Me Up Farms, now located at the Piazza del Fiore shopping center, started as a nonprofit bakery, springing up during the COVID-19 pandemic to support members of the community that were the most heavily impacted, evolving into a pop-up and becoming a staple of the farmers market scene.

Founder and CEO Ciara Cerro, who grew up just miles away from the North Fresno storefront, said the Nov. 25 grand opening represented more than just the opening of a business — it represented a dream Cerro said has buy-in from the entire team at the bakery.

“This dream isn’t just mine. It’s become something bigger than anything I could have done on my own and I couldn’t ask for a better team,” she said in a news release. “These are the people who want to make everyone they meet have a better day because they’ve got the biggest hearts you will ever find.”

Wake Me Up Farms’ Chief Operating Officer Stephen Buckner echoed those sentiments, inviting guests to come check out the warm atmosphere and “feeling of community” the store inspires.

“Our roots started here,” he said. “We wanted those roots to present themselves to the community so that we could connect to those that we’re serving on a more personal level.”

In May, Wake Me Up Farms competed in Fresno Pacific University’s Center for Community Transformation (CTT) at its second-annual “Start-up Fest.” There it won an Ignite Awards, which highlight small businesses that have shown excellence in leadership and management, a customer centric approach in operation, execution, being flexible, embracing the entrepreneurial spirit and showing passion and resilience.

Wake Me Up Farms worked with Access Plus Capital to help fund their expansion plans.

Wake Me Up Farms Bakery Café is open Tuesday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 6 a.m. to noon.
