Ace Frehley of the legendary rock band Kiss died, his family confirmed in a statement Thursday, saying the guitarist was surrounded by family and loved ones in his last moments.

Frehley, whose legal name is Paul Daniel Frehley, was the original lead guitarist for the band since the group’s founding in 1973.

“We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others,” the family statement read. “Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever!”

Last month, Frehley’s manager posted on social media that the musician had to cancel a performance in Lancaster after suffering a minor fall.

“He’s fine,” the post had noted on Sep. 26. “Against his wishes, his doctor insists that he refrain from travel at this time.”

Frehley was also scheduled to perform at Yaamava’ Theater in Highland next February.

The New York City native was regarded as one of the greatest metal guitarists of all time.

Frehley was 74 years old.
