Sacramento County is now accepting applications for residents interested in serving on the 2026-27 grand jury. In addition to its civil oversight responsibilities, the grand jury is also authorized to hear criminal indictments.As part of its annual work, the grand jury visits local detention facilities, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Crime Lab, and the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. Jurors also review complaints submitted by the public and publish detailed reports on their findings. Previous reports and official responses are available online.To qualify, applicants must be U.S. citizens at least 18 years old, have lived in Sacramento County for at least one year, and be able to speak, read and write English. Volunteers should also be prepared to commit 20 to 30 hours per week. Jurors receive a small stipend for their service.Applications must be submitted by Jan. 2, 2026. The Sacramento County grand jury plays a critical oversight role, examining the operations of county government, local cities, public schools—including community colleges—and special district agencies.
