The death of a sister-in-law of former U.S. Sen. and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney at a Valencia parking garage in October has been ruled a suicide, the county medical examiner said Tuesday.

Carrie Elizabeth Romney, 64, was found dead on the night of Oct. 10 inside the garage in the 24500 block of Town Center Drive in the community north of Los Angeles.

The county medical examiner said the cause of Romney’s death was determined to be blunt traumatic injuries, impacts to the body from objects or surfaces. The medical examiner said the fatal injuries were from a fall from the rooftop of the five-story parking structure near the Hyatt Regency hotel.

The manner of death was suicide.

Mitt Romney, who delivered his farewell speech on the Senate floor in December 2024, issued a statement to “People” following his sister-in-law’s death.

“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives,” the statement said. “We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Carrie Romney and George Scott Romney, Mitt Romney’s brother, were married in November 2016. The couple had been separated since May 25, according to an L.A. County divorce petition filed by George Scott Romney on June 10.
