Good morning! Here’s what you need to know today.

Your Weather Planner

It’s a chilly start for your Wednesday morning followed by a warm afternoon.

A building ridge of high pressure will continue to bring temperatures well above normal.

Count on dry, sunny and warm weather for the rest of the week, but weekend temperatures won’t be as warm.

1. Activist arrested for vandalism after painting LA crosswalk deemed unsafe

Frustrated by the city’s slow progress in painting crosswalks at intersections they believe are unsafe, activists in Los Angeles have been picking up paint rollers and doing it themselves. Now one of them has been arrested on a vandalism charge.

In a video posted online, Jonathan Hale wears a bright yellow safety vest as he’s handcuffed by a police officer Sunday. His group, People’s Vision Zero, had organized a guerrilla “paint party” at a four-way intersection in a leafy residential neighborhood of west LA.

The mayor’s office says it has offered to collaborate with Hale and “any Angeleno who wants to make our streets safer” to develop solutions to expedite the installation of crosswalks.

2. Opera singer Jubilant Sykes killed in Santa Monica, son in custody

Santa Monica police were investigating the killing of a Grammy-nominated opera singer inside his home in the city’s Pico neighborhood, and one of the performer’s sons was in custody.

According to police, 71-year-old Jubilant Sykes was found in the home with injuries “consistent with a stabbing.” He was pronounced dead at the scene. Sykes was a renowned baritone who has performed at top venues and with celebrated orchestras in America and abroad.

One of Sykes’ sons, 31-year-old Micah Sykes, was found inside the home and taken into custody, and he was expected to be booked on suspicion of murder, police said. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

3. Chesney starts his UCLA football coaching era with energy, inspiration and a promise to win

Bob Chesney started his UCLA football coaching era with energy, inspiration and a promise to win. And already he’s sounding like a Bruin.

He says “we don’t need to be the other school in this town, we need to be ‘the’ school in this town.”

Chesney replaces DeShaun Foster, a UCLA alum who was fired in his second year after an 0-3 start this season. UCLA finished the season 3-9, including a 29-10 loss to crosstown rival Southern California.

Chesney led No. 12 James Madison to its best season in history, making the College Football Playoff. Chesney will stay to coach the team against No. 5 Oregon.
