FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Hot cocoa season may be merry and bright, but winterizing your home goes beyond twinkling lights.
“Just because something is working now, you don’t want to end up in a situation where something breaks down, especially if you’re hosting friends and family for the holidays,” says American Home Shield Director of Acquisition, Meredith Sprecher.
From clearing vents to replacing filters, your winter to-do list may sound a little something like this.
“Changing your air filters, sealing your windows and doors and insulating any exposed pipes,” Sprecher said. If you have things like in-ground sprinklers or a pool, it’s important to do the winterization on those as well.”
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, sealing drafts can save up to 20% on annual heating costs.
While not every home project requires a professional, there are costly mistakes that can come with DIY projects.
Sprecher says the Frontdoor app offers homeowners virtual help with live chat features to discuss home repair and maintenance.
If you have to go into your attic to get to your water heater, do electrical work or manage gas lines, it’s time to consider a professional.
The home warranty company is one of many that help homeowners manage out-of-pocket expenses to avoid costly repairs.
“You never know when something is going to break down,” Sprecher said. “We like to say it’s not a matter of if, but when.”
You can go to the Frontdoor app or website to look at various winterization and repair blog posts.
