FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Fresno city leaders are laying the groundwork for future growth west of Highway 99 with the adoption of the West Area Neighborhoods Specific Plan, a roadmap aimed at guiding responsible and equitable development in one of the city’s fastest-growing regions.
The plan, formerly called the Specific Plan of the West Area, focuses on neighborhoods generally north of Clinton Avenue and east of Garfield Avenue.
It sets goals for community improvements including traffic and public transportation upgrades, pedestrian and bicycle enhancements, and the identification of sites for future residential and commercial development.
“Approval of the West Area Neighborhoods Specific Plan finally gives the west area the roadmap it has long needed to grow responsibly and equitably,” says Annalisa Perea, Fresno City Councilmember. “By approving it, we’re ensuring that families west of Highway 99 finally get the same level of planning and opportunity seen in other parts of our city, such as grocery stores, parks, health clinics, and so much more. This plan represents Fresno at its bescollaborative, forward-thinking, and deeply rooted in community.”
The city plans to use the plan as a guide for consistent and compatible land development while addressing neighborhood identity and community needs.
Councilmembers highlighted the collaborative effort behind the plan during the official vote.
“This is a very significant moment,” one councilmember said as the motion was cast and approved.
Following the vote, applause and thanks were exchanged between councilmembers and staff.
