Good morning! Here’s what you need to know today.

Your Weather Planner

The SoCal warm wave is slowly coming to an end as we see just a little bit of cooling on Thursday. Temperatures will still be above average by 5-15 degrees.

Friday will cool by a few more degrees as the Santa Ana winds reverse into onshore winds.

We will start to see more of a marine influence with patchy marine-layer clouds near the coast. This trend will continue through the weekend.

1. LA County sues oil companies over unplugged wells in Inglewood Oil Field

Los Angeles County filed an environmental lawsuit Wednesday against oil and gas well operators to compel them to address what lawyers called dangers to human health and the environment caused by unplugged idle and exhausted oil and gas wells in the Inglewood Oil Field.

The Los Angeles Superior Court complaint alleges that Sentinel Peak Resources California LLC, Freeport-McMoRan Oil & Gas LLC, Plains Resources Inc. and Chevron U.S.A. Inc. failed to properly decommission and plug exhausted and idle oil and gas wells, thereby causing toxic pollutants to leak into the air, land and water, leading to significant environmental harms and health risks to communities surrounding the IOF.

Sentinel Peak attorney Erin Gleaton issued a statement Wednesday stating that the lawsuit was filed without justification and that its allegations contradict years of scientific work conducted by the state and county.

2. Anaheim collision injures 8; driver arrested

A 27-year-old man is under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence Thursday after allegedly striking and injuring eight Anaheim High School track athletes at an Anaheim intersection.

The students were waiting on the southwest corner of North Harbor Boulevard and North Street — less than a mile from Anaheim High School — for the light to change and continue their run at about 2:55 p.m. when the driver swerved off the road, onto a sidewalk, and struck them, according to Anaheim police Sgt. Matt Sutter.

The students were taken to a hospital with varying degrees of injuries, Sutter said.

3. Trump administration adds militarized zone in California along southern U.S. border

The Trump administration is adding another militarized zone to the southern U.S. border to support border security operations — this time in California.

The Department of Interior on Wednesday said it would transfer jurisdiction along most of California’s international border with Mexico to the Navy to reinforce “the historic role public lands have played in safeguarding national sovereignty.”

The newly designated militarized zone extends nearly from the Arizona state line to the Otay Mountain Wilderness, traversing the Imperial Valley and border communities including Tecate.

Since April, large swaths of border have been designated militarized zones, empowering U.S. troops to apprehend immigrants and others accused of trespassing on Army, Air Force or Navy bases, and authorizing additional criminal charges that can mean prison time. More than 7,000 troops have been deployed to the border, along with an assortment of helicopters, drones and surveillance equipment.

The military strategy was pioneered in April along a 170-mile stretch of the border in New Mexico and later expanded to portions of the border in Texas and Arizona.
