An alleged ex-con suspected of fatally shooting another homeless man in Long Beach in late October was charged Friday with murder.
Freddie Lamont Key Jr., 40, was arrested Wednesday by Special Investigations Division detectives in the 2600 block of South Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Key was initially booked on suspicion of an outstanding warrant and then re-booked on suspicion of murder, police said.
The case stems from the Oct. 23 killing of 39-year-old Dajuan Hunt, who was found around 9:45 p.m. Oct. 23 in the 5300 block of Cherry Avenue, near a railroad right-of-way, according to police, who said both men were homeless.
Police said Hunt sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
It’s unclear what led investigators to identify Key as the suspect.
The murder count includes allegations that Key personally used and intentionally discharged a firearm, committed the crime while on parole and has four prior felony convictions dating back to 2003 for crimes including assault with a deadly weapon.
