FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Central High School is facing new questions after a parent says his son’s award-winning water polo team is being celebrated by the city, while the school still doesn’t have its own pool.

The Central High Men’s Polo team is breaking records and ranking in the top 50 nationally.

The Fresno City Council has recognized the efforts and proclaimed December 4th Central High School’s Men’s Water Polo Team Day.

However, despite the accomplishments of the team, the school does not have its own pool.

The students need to take a one-hour bus ride after school to East Campus to practice.

Gabriel Suarez, a parent of a student, wrote a strongly worded letter to the school board about the situation.

Suarez said, “The school needs to do what’s right and fix the problem that they caused when they redrew their boundaries, and they did not plan on updating Central High.”

The letter stated that the situation was “embarrassing,” “inequitable,” and did not hold up to the school’s guiding principles of equity and access.

Suarez is also calling on the district to lay out a timeline for a pool so students can practice and compete at their own school.

Central Unified has not yet announced any plans to build a pool at Central High.
