BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — The Kern High School District announced the passing of Bill Hatcher, the former superintendent, who died at the age of 83. Hatcher’s career began in 1964 as a teacher and wrestling coach at Shafter High School.

He became principal of East Bakersfield High School in 1989 and was named the first-ever principal of Centennial High School in 1992.

Earlier this year, Hatcher was inducted into Centennial’s Hall of Fame. He served as the district’s superintendent until his retirement in 2004.

In a statement, the district said, “Bill’s vision of excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts continues to shape the district today.”

“Bill was a lifelong advocate for education and a champion for our students. Throughout his career, Bill was dedicated to ensure that students were provided with opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed. Our deepest condolences go out to Bill’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
