A 75-year-old inmate who died at the Men’s Central Jail died of natural causes, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner announced Friday.

Phillip Pena’s death was the result of pulmonary thromboembolism, a condition in which blood clots travel from elsewhere in the body and block an artery in the lungs, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Pena’s death was reported just after 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The sheriff’s department investigates all in-custody deaths, which are also examined by department oversight bodies such as the Inspector General’s Office.
