CHICAGO- United Airlines (UA) launched its historic first nonstop service from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Adelaide Airport (ADL) on December 11, 2025.

United Nonstop Flight to Adelaide
United Airlines (UA) operates this seasonal route from San Francisco (SFO) to Adelaide (ADL) on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays until March 2026. The flight departs late evening and arrives two days later after crossing the Pacific.
According to The Points Guy, a dedicated group of aviation enthusiasts, known as AvGeeks, filled the inaugural flight.
These fans recognize aircraft types instantly, know airline fare codes, and use the NATO phonetic alphabet casually. The community includes people of all ages and backgrounds, creating an energetic atmosphere at the gate.
Passengers included Warren Rieutort-Louis from Cupertino, wearing a custom kangaroo outfit, who chases United inaugurals and has attended routes like Bangkok, Greenland, and Mongolia this year.
Chuck Powers and Jamie Richards, on their first trip to Australia but repeat inaugural attendees, praised the unique energy among travelers and locals at the destinations.
Fans exchanged gifts such as ornaments and a mini-puzzle of a flying emu. Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning, attended the preflight party in the SFO Polaris Lounge and spoke at the gate.
He stated the flight marks the first nonstop service between the United States and Adelaide, emphasizing United as the leading Pacific carrier and the only one with nonstops to four major Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide.
United leads in Pacific capacity, serving over 6 million passengers in 2025. Recent unconventional additions include Nuuk in Greenland and Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia.
While some routes like Senegal and Sweden face cuts in 2026, most new destinations succeed. Upcoming 2026 routes feature Split, Croatia; Bari, Italy; and Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
Adelaide (ADL), South Australia’s capital, located 850 miles west of Sydney, complements United’s Australian network.

Inaugural Celebrations and Onboard Experience
United hosted events in the Polaris Lounge with airline staff, airport employees, Australian officials, media, and fans.
Celebrations highlighted United’s pandemic-era support for Australia, maintaining service as a lifeline.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony included executives, staff, dignitaries, and Capt. Mark Champion (United VP of Flight Operations) and crew. The aircraft featured a special Australian postage stamp decal on the tail.
The Boeing 787-9 includes 48 Polaris business-class seats in a 1-2-1 configuration with direct aisle access and 75-inch flat beds.
A 4-row mini-cabin provides privacy. Window seats alternate proximity to the window; odd-numbered seats sit closest. Center pairs have large dividers.
In 2026, upgrades will add suites with doors, ottomans, and expand to 56 seats. Premium Plus has 21 seats in 2-3-2, plus Economy Plus and Economy in 3-3-3.
Inaugural passengers received gifts at their seats. A special menu featured crab salad, followed by mixed grill of Southern Australian rock lobster and barramundi with herb butter, balsamic-glazed Brussels sprouts, and creamy potato gratin with leeks.
