Solana Beach City Councilmember Jill MacDonald was appointed the city’s deputy mayor on Dec. 10 for a one-year term.
The city’s four council members who each represent a district rotate the position of deputy mayor every December. The mayor, which is a separately elected position, serves a four-year term and is also a voting member of the City Council.
The council voted unanimously on the appointment.
MacDonald was first elected to the Solana Beach City Council in 2022 representing District 4, which covers most of the eastern portion of the city. She replaces Councilmember Kristi Becker, who served as deputy mayor over the past year.
In the 2020 and 2022 elections, the city adopted a separately elected mayor and four council districts. Before that, there were five council members who all served at-large and rotated the positions of mayor and deputy mayor each year.
