FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A local animal shelter is asking the community to open its hearts and homes to adoptable animals this holiday season.

Action News was in the neighborhood as the Animal Compassion Team in Fresno hosted its annual Open House event today on Orange Avenue, dazzling visitors with a pooch parade full of dogs wearing ugly sweaters, a raffle and Christmas treats for four-legged friends.

The event is an effort to increase adoptions of the shelter’s dogs, which are currently at capacity.

Organizers are encouraging families to consider adopting a pet, as many are looking for ways to stretch their holiday budgets or plan for a dog in the near future.

“This time of year, especially times are tough for people; they don’t have a lot of money, and they have to be decisive as to where they spend their extra funds,” says Doug Gray, ACT coordinator and volunteer. “So, we think this is a good time to get out and see who we have, maybe plan for the Spring, find a dog that you want, or just be involved with the shelter.”

The shelter says it is always in need of volunteers to assist with responsibilities around the facility.

Proceeds from the raffle benefit the shelter throughout the year.
