(Inside California Politics) — Tech entrepreneur Jon Slavet has announced his candidacy for the 2026 California gubernatorial race, running as a Republican after previously being a Democrat.

Slavet, who has lived in California for 30 years, cites his evolution in political beliefs as a key reason for his party switch. He believes the Republican Party offers better solutions to the state’s challenges, such as economic policies focused on free markets and individual rights.

“Like many Democrats before me, I’ve evolved over time,” Slavet said during an interview on Inside California Politics. “I think that my positions changed, and I’d say that, like the famous quote from Reagan, the party left me.”

Slavet emphasized the importance of bipartisan cooperation, stating that as governor, he would aim to build bridges with Democrats and independents to address California’s issues. He acknowledged the difficulty Republicans face in winning statewide elections in California but expressed confidence in appealing to a broad cross-section of voters.

Slavet’s campaign priorities include addressing the state’s budget deficit through a zero-based budgeting approach, reducing homelessness with more efficient spending, and controlling energy costs by ending certain climate taxes.

On immigration, Slavet expressed his belief in treating immigrant communities with dignity while enforcing border laws. He opposes California’s sanctuary state status, calling it a moral hazard that encourages illegal immigration.

“When you tell someone, cross the border that if you come to California, we will give you benefits and health care, why wouldn’t anyone come to California?” he said. “It’s a bait and switch. It’s immoral.”
