1. Rob Reiner, son of a comedy giant who became one in turn, dies at 78

Rob Reiner, the son of a comedy giant who became one himself as one of the preeminent filmmakers of his generation with movies such as “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally …” and “This Is Spinal Tap,” has died. He was 78.

Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, were found dead Sunday at their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation confirmed their identities but could not publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Authorities were investigating an “apparent homicide,” said Capt. Mike Bland with the Los Angeles Police Department. The Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded to a medical aid request shortly after 3:30 p.m.

Investigators were questioning a family member of Reiner, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation. Los Angeles Police had not identified a suspect, Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton, the chief of detectives, said at a briefing on Sunday night.

2. LA authorities step up security at Hanukkah events after Australia attack

Authorities were providing extra patrols at Jewish facilities and Hanukkah events throughout Los Angeles County Sunday after a deadly attack in Australia killed as many as 16 people who were gathered at a beach to celebrate the first day of the Jewish holiday.

“The Los Angeles Police Department is deeply saddened by the tragic mass shooting attack that occurred during a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia. We stand in solidarity with the Jewish Community in Australia and here in Los Angeles, and our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those impacted by this senseless act of violence,” the LAPD said in a statement shortly after news of the tragedy broke.

“While there is no known threat to Los Angeles at this time, the LAPD remains vigilant and committed to protecting out diverse communities. As part of this commitment, the LAPD will provide extra patrols at Jewish facilities, schools, synagogues and at Hanukkah events throughout the city,” the statement continued.

“The LAPD will continue to work closely with our local, national, and international partners to monitor developments and ensure the safety of our city. Together, we can honor the spirit of Hanukkah by standing united against hate and violence.”

3. Karen Bass launches re-election campaign with rally in Downtown LA

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass formally began her campaign for re-election Saturday with a rally in downtown Los Angeles, promising to make the city safer and more affordable while positioning herself as a candidate who will take on the Trump administration.

Two days after the third anniversary of her swearing-in, Bass launched her campaign surrounded by family, friends and allies at the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College Culinary Arts event space.

“This is just overwhelming. I have to tell you my heart is so full,” she said. “This is so powerful and means so much to me because this has been a hell of a year.”

“They say we can’t come together. Labor can’t come together with business, and business can’t come together with community, and the faith community can’t come together. But we all come together always,” Bass added. “And I’m proud to say that the relationships in this room aren’t relationships because of the campaign. … They are relationships because we all believe in justice.”

4. Brown University student survived being shot in high school. Then came the active shooter alerts

When Brown University junior Mia Tretta’s phone began buzzing with an emergency alert during finals week, she tried to convince herself it couldn’t be happening again.

In 2019, Tretta had been shot in the abdomen during a mass shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California. Two students were killed, and she and two others were wounded. She was 15 at the time.

On Saturday, Tretta was studying in her dorm with a friend when the first message arrived, warning of an emergency at the university’s engineering building. Something must have happened, she thought, but surely it couldn’t be a shooting.

As more alerts poured in, urging people to lock down and stay away from windows, the familiarity of the language made clear what she had feared. By the end of the day, two people were dead and nine others injured in the Providence, Rhode Island, shooting that once again upended a school campus.
