TRENDING
Idle — Adcock arrived at Elon as a catcher and was pitching in the back of the bullpen when he signed for $150,000 as the Mariners’ eighth-round pick in 2019. From there, the start to his pro career was met with obstacle after obstacle. Adcock endured a shoulder impingement after the draft, lost the 2020 season to the pandemic and then underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021. He finally got into official games in the Mariners system in 2022, made his MLB debut the next year for Seattle (15⅔ IP, 3.45 ERA) and then was designated for assignment in the spring of 2024. The Tigers first claimed Adcock. Then he was claimed by the Mets, who employed him in some capacity from May 2024 until he reached free agency in November. A month later, the Padres, with several open spots on their 40-man roster, signed Adcock to a big-league deal. At the time, he was in the midst of striking out 15 over nine innings of two-run ball in the Dominican winter league, further fueling the team’s interest in a strong frame with a riding fastball up to 99 mph, a hard cutter, a slider and a developing splitter. To date, Adcock has thrown just 23 innings (5.48 ERA, 19 strikeouts, 4 walks) in the majors.
2026 OUTLOOK
Adcock is technically out of minor league options, but a long and winding path to the majors might allow the Padres to apply for another. A team can apply for a fourth option year when a player has played fewer than five full seasons (90 days on the active roster in either the majors or the minors) and Adcock didn’t make his professional debut 2022. Either way, he’ll compete for a spot in the bullpen and hopefully give the Padres six years of control of a relief arm with upside.
