CALIFORNIA, Md. — A violent home assault in California, Maryland, left a man hospitalized with serious head injuries after he was allegedly pistol-whipped by two armed individuals, according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO). Deputies say the attack stemmed from a dispute over stolen narcotics.

According to SMCSO reports, deputies responded to Patuxent Beach Road on Nov. 24 after receiving a call reporting an assault. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the victim, who told officers he had been attacked by two individuals — later identified by police as Shamal Ulysses Weems, 46, and George Thomas Young, 40, both of California, Maryland.

The victim reported that he was pistol-whipped and kicked in the face during the assault. He was subsequently flown to a regional trauma center for treatment of head trauma consistent with the reported injuries, police said.

Investigators said the victim had been staying at the residence for several days and, according to police documents, had been using cocaine. The assault allegedly occurred after Young and Weems accused the victim of stealing cocaine from them. Police documents indicate that a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo reported to be parked at the residence was missing when deputies returned to the scene. At that time, Weems was detained while taking out the trash. Police said Weems requested a lawyer after being read his Miranda rights.

According to police documents, during a subsequent search warrant execution, deputies reportedly discovered blood inside the residence and on the steps outside. Officers also located a 9mm Polymer 80 unserialized handgun with no round in the chamber and a loaded magazine, police said.

Weems was arrested and held without bond. According to court documents, he is facing multiple charges including assault in the first degree, assault in the second degree, firearm use in the commission of a felony and illegal possession of a firearm. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 23, 2025, in St. Mary’s District Court.

According to court records, Young is also facing charges including assault in the first degree, assault in the second degree, firearm use during a felony, possession of firearms by a prohibited person and illegal possession of ammunition. A warrant for Young was recalled on Dec. 2, 2025 and a summons was issued on Dec. 3, 2025. Preliminary inquiry hearings are scheduled for Jan. 2, 2026, in St. Mary’s District Court.
