SoCal Grilling Company, a new barbecue restaurant in southwest Bakersfield, has opened its doors, offering a unique blend of industrial and country themes.

Owner Alex Ruiz, whose two veteran played a big role in the concept of the restaurant , said, “We need to do something cool in the southwest, something a little bit more American, barbecue, industrial.” The restaurant features cement columns and wood accents, reflecting Kern County’s agricultural and industrial roots.

Ruiz plans to honor veterans by dedicating a wall to them, displaying 20 photos of veterans. The menu boasts popular items like tri-tip, barbecue ribs, pulled pork and creative sides such as sweet potato bombs. “We’ve been eating tri-tip ever since we got to Kern County,” Ruiz said, recalling the discovery of the dish in 1995 when he and his family moved from Los Angeles to Bakersfield.
