LONG BEACH — The Lakewood girls basketball team built a double-digit lead before holding on in the fourth quarter for a 57-51 victory over Long Beach Poly on Thursday that ended the Jackrabbits’ streak of 212 consecutive wins in the Moore League under coach Carl Buggs.

“I look for girls that play my style of basketball,” Lakewood coach Eric Oswell said, “which is hard defense, a lot of heart, leave everything on the court, do what it takes to win a game.”

Lakewood never trailed as it handed Poly its first league loss since 2008.

“I guess that means I’ve been around a long time,” Buggs said of the streak. “I feel it in my bones and everything. Streaks end. I’m just happy the girls fought back, and as long as we learn from this, we can try to start a new one.”

Lancers freshman guard Aniyah Lindsey scored a game-high 22 points. Sophomore forward Laylah Patterson had 10 points and junior guard Isabella Ramsey added seven points and 11 rebounds.

The Lancers improved to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in the Moore League.

“I feel like it was a team effort,” Lindsey said. “We all had to bring energy.”

Lakewood led 46-30 at the end of the third quarter.

Poly freshman guard Eliana Mao scored 16 of her team-high 19 points in the final quarter, including a 3-pointer that cut Lakewood’s lead to 54-51 with less than a minute go.

“She can be streaky like that,” Buggs said. “When she’s on, she can hit them from anywhere. We’re just looking for consistency and balance in what she’s doing, but she’s been doing a great job.”

Mao stole the inbounds pass but her 3-point shot that would have tied the score fell short.

Lakewood freshman guard Leilah Sieng, who finished with seven points, made one of two free throws to put Lakewood up 55-51.

Lindsey was fouled with 19.6 seconds to go. She made one of two free throws to make it 56-51.

Ramsey later made a free throw to secure the victory.

“I feel like we can win it all,” said Lindsey when asked about the team’s pursuit of the Moore League title.

Jackrabbits senior guard Ana Villamar had 14 points. Senior center Imani Hagens added eight points and eight rebounds.

Poly (1-9 overall, 1-1 in league) employed a full-court press and outscored Lakewood 21-11 in the fourth.

“The girls just had to believe in themselves more than anything else,” Buggs said. “The thing that’s been hurting us all year is that teams come and attack us early, and if we turn the ball over. It just seems to snowball from there. We start panicking a little bit.”

Ramsey’s 3-pointer and a layup by senior center Kasey-Rian Henson put Lakewood up 5-0 early. Villamar’s putback made it 5-2 and her and-one cut Lakewood’s lead to 11-5 midway through the first.

Lakewood’s defense continued to force turnovers, which helped the Lancers establish a 19-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Lindsey scored the first six points of the second quarter and extended Lakewood’s advantage to 25-7.

Freshman guard Jovahnah Dalton made a jumper to stop Poly’s scoring drought and made it 25-9.

Patterson responded with an emphatic and-one to go up 28-9. Lindsey’s layup made it 30-10 midway through the second.

She led all scorers with 10 points in the first half as Lakewood led 35-18 at halftime.
