LOS ANGELES – A police investigation is underway following a violent robbery and stabbing involving two teenagers at the Westfield Topanga mall on Thursday afternoon.Â
What we know:
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to reports of a stabbing at the Westfield Topanga mall in Canoga Park at around 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18.
An investigation revealed that two juvenile suspects approached the two teenage victims. One of the suspects made a comment about a gold chain one of the victims was wearing. The suspect then grabbed the chain. As they fought, the other teen suspect brought out a knife and stabbed the second victim in his arm, police said in a statement.Â
The second victim was taken to a local hospital and later released. Police said the first victim sustained a minor laceration to the back of his head and was treated at the scene. Both victims are 15-years-old, police added.Â
The teen suspects fled on foot northbound on Owensmouth Avenue with the victim’s gold chain.
Tips to keep safe
Local perspective:
Just as the busy holiday weekend ramps up, there were still plenty of shoppers at the mall on Friday. Many said they are aware but not too worried, as there is visible security walking around the mall.
Security experts say that people wearing jewelry, especially flashy ones, can be targeted. The same with women with expensive handbags.Â
“Street Smarts” author Dannah Eve, tells FOX 11 she understands why women who just get engaged, for example, are adamant about wearing their rings. She suggests that flipping the stone to the inside of your hand, especially when walking to your vehicle in the parking lot, makes you less of a threat.
“So is paying attention to your surroundings, instead of constantly keeping your eyes on your cell phone, texting,” Eve stated.Â
Tips to stay safe during the holiday season
The holiday season can bring greater safety risks, from late night shopping to holiday travel and unfamiliar situations. Safety expert Dannah Eve joined FOX 11 with smart and practical tips, especially for women on staying aware and avoiding risks.
Security experts say the idea is not to be perceived as a possible victim. Situational awareness helps, even planning what you would do in a situation before it actually happens can help.Â
“Think what would you do if someone jumped out from behind a car?” Eve added, “It’s not negative thinking, it’s planning what you could do, and identifying things that could help you protect yourself, or where the exit is.”
Most important, she adds, “is give it up, don’t fight for that jewelry. Take it off and throw it as far away from you as possible, and get away”. Nothing is worth getting hurt, or worse, losing your life.Â
Suspects still outstandingÂ
What we don’t know:
Both suspects are still on the loose. Police say they are both between the ages of 16 and 18.Â
